Romantic Comedy
by Curtis Sittenfeld
DNF @ 50%
At first, I was really trying to push through this book because of all the hype it was getting and because I literally haven’t DNF’d a book in over a decade. There were so many times I thought about DNF’ing this, literally only 20 pages in, but decided to keep going and push through so I could give it a full review. I couldn’t do it.
First off, this book is NOT a rom or a com, so if you’re looking for either - you’ll be disappointed with this one. The main character is Sally, a writer for a SNL type show. She has the worst personality for someone who is supposed to be a comedy writer. Her “love interest” is a celebrity named Noah who comes on the show. They have absolutely no chemistry, and it feels very much like a middle school crush.
THIS BOOK DOES NOT HAVE CHAPTERS!!!! It has “chapters 1-3” but really, you can’t call it a chapter when it’s 100+ pages. That in and of itself made me want to quit reading it. Part 1 is all about the course of the SNL type show over a week. The writers are overworked, they stay up late, blah blah blahhhhhh. Sally used to be married and now seems to hate relationships and is just very confusing overall. Part 2 takes place two years later during COVID and it’s EMAILS FOR 80 PAGES!!!! PUH-LEASE.
This author is entirely too open about her political beliefs and agenda. I don’t care what a person believes, but please for the love of everything, don’t put it in a rom com!!! It literally made me want to puke how every character is described as black or white. And that’s not racist????
So many times I just asked myself “why”. why is this labeled a rom com. Why is this so overhyped. Why. To be 100% honest whoever designed the cover should get credit because that was 70% of why I picked this book up in the first place. Just don’t even waste your time.
