Midnight Timetable took a moment to grow on me, but it's a decent little linked series. It's not nearly as inventive, ambitious, or dark as Bora Chung's other collections; it reads like stories written by someone who hasn't actually read a lot of horror, and isn't confident enough to play around with old standards and themes. Maybe 'laboratory for haunted objects' isn't as formulaic an idea in South Korea? I liked a few of the plot threads (the handkerchief's history was great!) they just never quite went far enough.
Warning for animal violence and death
(sheep, a cat)
. It isn't too explicit, just jarring, and
the animals get a happy ending, sort of
.
