Everyday Gospel Christmas Devotional by Paul David Tripp

informative reflective medium-paced

3.5

This little book was handed out by one of my pastors at church, who got hold of forty or fifty copies at no coast from the publisher. I've only read one other book by Tripp, and that was over fifteen years ago. However, I received a copy of his devotional, New Morning Mercies, this morning for Christmas and will starting on that in January.

This book is strictly a Christmas devotional, as the title says. It begins on December 1 (which happened to be the first day of Advent in 2024, but won't be every year) and goes through today, December 25. Every day's reading is right at two pages long, begins with a suggested Scripture reading and ends with a nice prayer. Some of the devotions are really good, some are just okay. And I would be willing to bet that if I spoke with everyone in my church who received a copy of this book, they would all have had a similar experience, but would pick different readings than I would for the better ones. And that's the thing about spiritual resources. Each of us has different needs when heading into something like this, so different pieces of it will speak more loudly than others, and we will all get something different out of it.

I thought the book was pretty good, but not amazing or great. It served a purpose. And, in all fairness, I will confess that I added too many resources this year for Advent/Christmas, and that may have honestly affected my enjoyment of it. Hopefully, I've learned something for next year's Advent season.

I do recommend this book, though, for anyone who would like a short, seasonal devotional that is easily accessible. Again, only two pages per day, so it doesn't take more than a minute or two. I might add that it is available as a free download from Tripp's website.
