Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

4.5

Having watched the movie first, I was very surprised at the masses of people who claim the book is way different from the movie. Obviously it’s not a word for word adaptation but it felt pretty similar to me.
And having already known most of the characters, I felt like the book just made me love them more. The very specific brand of a ship that’s grumpxsunshine but it works both way simultaneously is so delectable, I’ll eat it up every time. Aside from that though, it feels like all the characters just come right off the page. They’re perfectly imperfect and have just the right level of humor to each of them. I appreciate that while the main focus of the book is Sophie, all the side characters are running schemes as well.
Diana Wynne Jones also has such a talent for infusing magic into ordinary things. The fantasy lands she creates are so delightful (and who could forget the magical land of wales??)
