WOW. I could not have asked for a better first comic, genuinely. The entire thing was engaging, AND the end made me emotional — I was skeptical when Marc started talking about
“letting go” of Jake and Steven
(because uhhh no? That is not what he needs to do?) but the realizations he made in the final part of the story had me teary eyed, truly. It was such a beautiful journey and look into Marc’s brain. I enjoyed how the story both was and wasn’t an “origin story” — knowing Moon Knight’s origin going into the book wasn’t a disservice at all, but the way they reveal the truth only in the second half of the book, the past converging with the present, was SO cool, and it would be a really good starting point for someone who knows nothing about the character. It’s not written like one, but it could certainly read like a great twist if you’re going in blind.
Additionally, the entire middle part of this book felt like repeatedly waking up from a nightmare and going “thank goodness, it was only a dream” only to realize that you are now trapped in an entirely different and arguably worse nightmare. Over and over. It was really well done. The art styles switching between alters (/realities) was also really cool, but my favorite was the main reality art style used throughout most of the book. The kind of “sketch”-y feeling with the rough inking was really cool, I’ll definitely look into more of Smallwood’s work.
