Eloise and the Grump Next Door by Jenny Proctor, Emma St. Clair

3.25

The Island of Oakley is a close knit town where everyone knows eveeyone and is in their neighbors business literally and figuratively. Jake is a lawyer highered by Gennie to manage her will upon her passing, it is with her departure that we are introduced to her three granddaughters: Merrit, Sadie, and Eloise.

Jake has revealed to them that the house, the carriage house, land, and a trust has been left to them under the stipulation that one or all of them must remain on the island and renovate the home into a Bed and Breakfast. Once renovation is complete they can keep, sell, or buyout but it cannot be done until reno is completed. Just so happens 21 year old Eloise just graduated college and has no other prospect consider grad school didn't accept her.

Eloise is a go getter and takes the challenge head on. However, she doesn't intend to fall for the grumpy thirty-two year old lawyer who lives conviently next door in the carriage house. Weird that her gran's lawyer would live on the property right?

This is a age gap, grumpy sunshine, lack of communication, bell pepper spice book. It is fun and quick to read. Entertaining and lighthearted. There are moments that will make you laugh. If you are looking for something to clear the reading cobwebs this book will help.

• Initial Response: How did you feel as soon as you had finished the book? Was it good, bad, or indifferent?
It was a quick, light, fun read. It left me feeling content. (4/5)

• Recommendation: How likely are you to recommend this book to a friend?
I would recommend for someone maybe in a reading slump or looking for something just fun and easy to pass the time. It is not a book you truly have to pick through to fogure things out so it is a nice pallet cleanser. (3/5)

• Re-Readability: Do you think you will reread this book? Or is it heading to the back of your bookshelf?
Honestly, I would probably only reread it after a few years when the memory of the plot fades. Otherwise it would be donated or given to a friend. (3/5)

• Style: Did you enjoy the writing style? Or did the author's tone distract you from the content?
The writing style was very easy to read despite it being two authors. There was no harsh disconnect between the two. It was a light novel. (4/5)

• Plot/Structure: How engaged were you in the story? Were you excited? Shocked? Moved? How keen were you to turn the page and find out what happened next?
I read the book rather quickly however the plot was fairly straight forward and predictable. That is not to say it isn't a trope that isn't done well. It is just done often. (3/5)

• Character: How relatable were the characters? Were there any that you particularly engaged with?
To me they weren't relatable. I can't fathom living on an island small town where my biggest worry is renovating a deceased family members large house. It is just fun to get lost in a story that isn't real life. (2/5)
