The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet
by David Mitchell
My favorite book of the last couple of years. I love Mitchell's writing style. His brevity of description is so precise that you have a feel for the look and feel of the settings in very few words. Keep track of the characters at the beginning, because he doesn't help you out by spelling out who was doing what a few chapters or pages earlier. The middle and latter sections of the book were page turners for me. Excellent historic fiction.
