Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson
5.0
Wow! Simply put this book was incredible. The only Sanderson I've read at this point would be the Stormlight Archives, but I can already tell that I'm going to be delving into the entire Cosmere for the next few years! (Despite the mantra of "journey before destination" the ending really is THAT good) Sanderson's writing balances the scale of a universe-spanning threat with character moments and arcs that are just so human and which speak to our shared fears about what is right, what is worth fighting for, and who gets to decide your fate. Adolin's story in particular not only had some of the best fighting scenes I've ever read, but in his talks with the young Emperor Yanagawn, I found lessons of empathy, leadership, and mentorship sprinkled in with just the right amount of levity that somehow manages to avoid feeling forced or preachy. The characters are so rich and complex that when looking at the world through each of their perspectives, you can't help but be absorbed into their morality and way of thinking to the point that all tropes or archetypes melt away. This is even true for Taravangian whose despicable and downright heinous actions are given both depth and understanding as we see him walk the tightrope between wrath and compassion (although I will say I was losing my mind a little because of how absolutely EVIL and manipulative he was throughout - kudos to writing a great villain). On the flip side of this, Kaladin's perspective continues the optimistic tone Sanderson is known for and his trajectory as a therapist even offers redemption and healing to characters I thought near irredeemable, doubly so when paired with the historical revelations found in Dalinar's visions. Kaladin and Szeth's pairing was a true stroke of inspiration and as their relationship evolves you are shown the true power of earned second chances, which of course mirrors Dalinar's trajectory in all the best ways. I can't wait to see where books 6 - 10 take us and these characters, but for now I need to rest and recharge my dun spheres. Storms Brandon - you've done it again!
