 In Demigod 12, Phex must also reckon with his growing feelings for Missit, even as romance is forbidden by the divinity. However, as they grow closer, Phex comes to realize that the Dyesi understanding of love and desire among humans is limited at best. Resolving the conflict of Demigod 12 hinges not on action, but on interpersonal communication, and the characters finding a way to convey inconceivable ideas across species boundaries. The pantheon system may be broken and perhaps even exploitative, but the motivations that underlie it are nothing he could have expected.
