The Little Demon by Fyodor Sologub

1⭒

I see what Fyodor Sologub is trying to do, but I wished to see the baseness of human nature portrayed in a less repulsive manner. I was going to force my way through since I had wanted to read this book for such a long time. Nevertheless, I did a little research on the rest of the book, and it seems there are far worse things than the part that initially disgusted me. The book contains even more disturbing scenes, such as power dynamics and degrading themes, all described in filthy and grotesque imagery, clearly meant to unsettle the reader.

That was a hard no for me. When people called this book “silly,” I assumed they meant whimsical or hideous. Turns out, we have very different definitions of silliness.

I guess his writing style just wasn’t for me I appreciate symbolism and usually don’t mind if it’s disturbing, sometimes, I even enjoy it more when it unsettles me. But call me stupid—I don’t think this one was worth enduring the urge to throw up the whole time. A few chapters might be tolerable, but pushing through just feels like a waste of time. (Don’t tell anyone but I doubt it will provoke any profound thought I couldn’t find elsewhere, so why even bother?)

While it wasn’t for me, I can see how some readers might appreciate its dark themes and unsettling atmosphere. Sologub’s skill is evident, and for those who aren’t as sensitive to such explorations, this book could offer a unique experience. I might see its merit if I weren’t one of those readers.
