The Summoning
by Kelley Armstrong
I was nit picking the beginning of this books like crazy. I seem to still be very skeptical of YA because I definitely don't do this to Kelley's adult books. I eat those up and walk away humming.
I feel like some hints should have been a bit subtler, but this is perhaps due to my reading experience. And I am beginning to have a big problem with all these absent parents. I got into more than enough trouble as a teen and both of my parents were around and attentive. That aside, once I got into the meat of this story I ate it up. I was right there with Chloe. Who, by the way, is a main character I love for once. Normally I fall in love with the side characters and/or the love interests. But Chloe is my favorite character in the book. And Derek reminds me of my brother which cracks me up (and I think may secretly get him to read the book). Kelley Armstrong's characters are always so vivid and so distinct and her female protagonists so strong and admirable. I love her world she creates. Now I need to go steal, pilfer, and ravage a bookstore for The Awakening with complete disregard for the 80 books in my room screaming my name. Or, ya know, just convince someone to mail me their copy.
