The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer
3.0

I'm glad I read this book. I rolled my eyes when it was recommended to me... Stephanie Meyer? The Twilight author? I'll pass!

I now have great respect for Meyer---not only is this a captivating book with clever writing, she has taken on the spy genre after vampires and aliens. That kind of breadth and diversity is admirable. The amount of thorough research and thoughtfulness put into this book is dually impressive and has convinced me to try other spy novels, an entire genre that I was convinced was "not me" !

This definitely wasn't a romance novel, btw. There was some gushy scenes but it wasn't the breathy goop I'd have expected (the little I know about Twilight) based on reputation. It wraps up a little too neatly and bores at times (and it won't make my top 10 this year) but I'm thankful for the exposure and reminder that reputations are not always fact.
