I never watched the movie. I listened to the audiobook with little knowledge other than, that this is a great movie, basic info on the storyline, and the issues with the Academy Awards. I plan on watching the movie after reading the book. However, I did read a few interviews and articles about Margaret Mitchell.
I agree with most of the reviews and my review will probably reiterate what has already been said.
While I think this book was well written, I think the arrogance, ignorance, and dedication to the Confederacy are what made this book so popular.
This book not only romanticized the Civil War but blamed the issues of the Reconstruction Period on the formerly enslaved people. As if they had many choices after being told they were free and not given any support by the Union and forced into a new type of enslavement. The book made it seem like the Union soldiers and northerners were horrible people, all blacks wanted to remain enslaved and Confederate Southerners were so innocent and gentle with the enslaved. *sigh* This book was written in 1936 about the Civil War by a white woman born in 1900. Margaret Mitchell grew up and was raised by people who lived through and possibly fought in the Civil War and lived through Reconstruction.

Rhett Butler was my favorite character. I also liked Melanie. Favorite Quotes:
•About the war: "All we have is cotton, slaves, and arrogance " Rhett Butler
•"Sir you are no gentleman" Scarlett O'Hara
"...And you miss are no lady" Rhett Butler
•"Frankly my dear I don't give a damn" Rhett Butler

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Linda Stephens. 49 hours, I listened to the audiobook for about 1 hour to 2 hours a day over 6 weeks. I followed up by watching the movie for the first time.
