I liked this more than I thought I would. I would say this is less of miscommunication trope and more of a zero communication trope but it kind of worked? I got where they were coming from- all their hesitations/anxieties and it just made the payoff so sweet. I also kind of love/hated that it was set in the early 2000s, the fashions were giving me PTSD but I loved how simple it made the story.
