My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix

Did not finish book. Stopped at 18%.
The writing felt like a nonstop product placement for anything that might evoke 80s nostalgia. The plot doesn’t start until the third chapter, instead opting to spend the first 30 pages just going on about different brands and the main characters’ reactions to said brands. There are also a few sections that felt really off, kinda red-flag vibes. EG: Page 29, two 10-year-old girls talk about their dad’s porn/fetish. Page 33, author describes one 10-year-old girl peeing her pants. Page 42, “DBNQ” - the two main characters way of saying ‘love you dearly but not queerly.’ I know this is set in a different era, and it would have been one thing if the homophobia ended there, but it feels forced and out of place when girls typically say ‘I love you’ to each other without needing the disclaimer. Definitely a slow burn if you can sit through it, not for me.
