This book started off well enough. With focuses on encouraging women to take up space, hold the same expectations of respect as men, let voices and ideas be heard, and be leaders. However by about 70%, credibility plummeted by several contradictory tips directing women to assimilate into patriarchal culture for success. Don’t have long feminine hair, don’t have any tattoos or piercings, don’t show feminine emotions or tears in professional settings, don’t dress overly feminine or wear jewelry, consider wearing makeup if you don’t (!) etc.  We should be breaking these patriarchal standards and expectations not bowing to them in fear of not being respected. Speak up if someone is letting their misogynistic biases impact the way they judge other professionals. Tattoos and piercings don’t impact an employees reliability or performance. And if I was employed by someone who knew I was a good employee but wanted me to take out my piercing for a purely aesthetic reason, I would leave for an employer who shares my values and respect standards. The author wrote something to the effect of “sweat it out in long sleeves to cover your tattoos it’s the price you paid for a poor decision”. Nah that’s a wild take.
