Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence by Esther Perel

5.0

Perel's content about balancing novelty and intimacy really hit the nail on the head, but with less polished writing than [b:The State of Affairs: Rethinking Infidelity|34318694|The State of Affairs Rethinking Infidelity|Esther Perel|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1495687657s/34318694.jpg|55014433], making it a less enjoyable read overall. While The State of Affairs flowed very seamlessly, Mating in Captivity abruptly jumped between topics and back, left loose thoughts dangling, and lacked clear salient points. Even if the writing was lacking in this first book, I'm quite impressed by the improvement between the two books, so big kudos for the investment.

Writing skills aside, Perel's main themes are the massive expectations placed on modern relationships (be my best friend, confidant, lover, and soul mate, all of them all the time!), how sometimes these roles can be in opposition, and ways to recognize and discuss the resultant conflicts. I think all of the above need open and frank narratives to help long term relationships be successful and applaud Perel for championing them.
