I wonder if I'd rate this higher if I'd read a physical copy vs listen to the audiobook- I wasn't a huge fan of the female narrator. Also, there was a lot of backstory that I felt it was hard to follow and maybe it would have been easier to figure it out if I hadn't been listening to the audio version. I thought the world building was definitely unique but it was confusing for a bit, but many things were eventually explained. The magic system was interesting but sometimes seemed a bit chaotic. I liked both of the main characters well enough and the spice was great, but I felt like they were at times dramatic. Perhaps that was the vibe from the narrators. I did feel like there were a lot of fantasy genres being smashed together in this book- pirates, vikings, and fae, which was again unique but also at times felt like too much forced together. I had been recommended this book because of the Viking vibes and romance, but I honestly didn't get that vibe much from the audiobook. I wanted to like this more...but honestly the best part was just the spice. I would probably read the next book for purposes of closure, but I'm not itching to dive right in.
