Funny Story by Emily Henry
4.0
funny lighthearted reflective medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

This was one of Emily Henry’s best works. It had her classic cast of characters (sassy best friend, loud little sister, quirky lesbians who love nature) but didn’t rely super heavily on the miscommunication trope. I liked that the main character experienced real growth but also still got her happy ending.

I appreciate the author’s attempt to diversify the cast, but the only people who’s skin tone/ethnicity is ever described or even mentioned are the non-white characters. This reinforces that Caucasian is the default. She does a better job than most authors, but there is still room for growth.

I really liked that this book got straight to the point. I felt like all the characters were well-rounded and the dialogue was snappy and fun. I almost want a sequel about all the people in town. I was never bored by the story despite knowing what would happen in the end.
