The Water Cure
by Sophie Mackintosh
I did not like this, but I can't decide if that's because there are actual problems with it or because it was just so thoroughly unpleasant to be with. I like flawed and complicated characters, especially flawed and complicated women. I like complicated relationships where characters both rely on and are trapped with other characters. I like moody, evocative prose. But this is so miserable, all the way through, and I couldn't figure out what she was trying to do or say, exactly, so I was left with the sensation of having spent hours with really damaged people for no reason?
Anyway. A good choice for readers who like dreamy language and don't care if literally nothing is explained and everyone is pretty much terrible to themselves and each other.
