My Sweet Girl by Amanda Jayatissa

dark tense fast-paced

3.5

Mmh… this book was certainly interesting. I feel like this falls on the more gothic side of mystery thrillers, which is a genre that I’m starting to like a lot. And I did enjoy this book and the eerie elements to the story kept me pulled into the storyline. However, something about it felt a bit lackluster. It maybe because of the way the book ended, it felt a bit too abrupt and anti-climatic.
Being a Sri Lankan myself, I really enjoyed the tone and slang of the main character, it was nostalgic to see people in books speak in similar ways to myself. But that’s where my adoration for the main character, Paloma stopped.

I feel like Paloma was a tad bit annoying. Yes, she was a ver straight forward person, who was also witty. But it really annoyed me how she kept doing the same things that she said she would stop doing. I understand it’s hard to let go of her habits, but the way her ‘raging alcoholic’ character trait was written felt a bit off. Paloma certainly has a lot of issues and it would have been more interesting to get more into depth to understand her character more. But given the fact that this is a thriller book and not contemporary fiction, I understand why it was written the way it was.

Other than a few abrupt reveals, I would have to agree that this was an enjoyable thriller book and the plot did keep me hooked.
