Snotgirl, Vol. 1: Green Hair Don't Care
by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Leslie Hung
I have never read the Scott Pilgrim comics, so I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I have seen a few clips of the movie and it didn't look like my sort of thing at all.
However, I saw Snotgirl, Vol. 1 in a bookstore a long time ago and the art immediately caught my eye. Reading it, however, was a different story. It's hard to make sense of the plot if there is any. It's kind of slice-of-life but turned up to the max because otherwise it'd be too boring to read. It feels like a drama class where everything gets turned up to level 10 and you can't say 'no' to anything so you just go with the flow.
Normally, lack of serious plot wouldn't matter...except you don't know where this is going. At all. A comic where the whole point is a mystery to both reader and main character is not exactly the most fun read for me. And I get that it's supposed to be *squints at book* romance and mystery, but the real mystery might be why I kept reading. (That's an easily-solved mystery, though-- I was able to check out all three tradeback volumes available from the local library system.)
Anyway, so things happen in these collected first five issues, but nothing is actually resolved, much less elucidated. And believe me, things only start getting clearer (baaaaaaarely) with tradeback volume 3.
Still, I love the fashion and art, and I guess the characters are certainly interesting. Actually, the more I write, the more I think I like it? But I'm still leaving this review at 2 stars, because it really was just 'ok.'
