What's it about?
An underground gameshow where virgins compete to maintain their virginity for ten million dollars.
🥀 I've got mixed feelings on this one, but the second half really sold me and upped my rating. This is definitely a fun read if you enjoy splatterpunk. There were times that dragged on or seemed repetitive in the first half. I just wanted things to cut to the chase and dive into a twist or some action in general. It's not necessarily that you don't have that the entire book, but the beginning is a bit boring and I could care less about how many times these women wanted to voice how they were going to win the competition or about killing the other contestants. There is lots of depravity within to keep you on your toes as you get further in.
🥀 You get multiple POVs of the five virgins as well as the woman that runs the game show. All gave interesting backstories that made it feel less shallow. Character development isn't to be expected, but it is nice having a general understanding of the contestants. I really rooted for Hailey the entire time. The ten suitors pursuing the women aren't given much attention, which is fine by me. There are some truly creepy scenes painted throughout the gameplay area that gave me chills. Plenty of creativity was harnessed here!
🥀This is somewhat reminiscent of a battle royale scenario. Everyone wants that sweet prize money, and killing is allowed. It is gory and gruesome at times, having me cringing at at a few parts. There is one part of the book that contains one of the horror tropes that truly terrify me and I never would have expected seeing it show up in this, so it was appreciated. I wish I could say more but man, it was done well.
🥀While I wouldn't call this a splatter masterpiece, I think if the story intrigues you, you should give it a shot. As much as I want to say more, I can't elaborate on the plot without spoiling anything.
🥀I definitely want to check more of the author's works out. I thought this was such a fun plot! I did find out there is a sequel to this!
🥀 Read if you like: splatterpunk, underground gameshow tropes, and want a quick but gory read.
