Sea Spell by Jennifer Donnelly
5.0
What an exhilarating conclusion to the Waterfire series. I was on the edge of my seat as I read about the Merls last attempt at saving their seas. There were times when I thought the ending was going to be sorrowful, but the author had me tricked!
I love how, above all else, this story is about friendship and strength. You can find strength in your relationships, but first you have to find it in yourself. This series taught that over and over again with each of the mermaids who were trying to find their way and their purpose. I also love how saving the oceans is paramount and I hope that more people read these books and realize that while they are fictional, the danger to our oceans is real.
Although I didn't like her much at first, I think Astrid became one of my favorites as she proved herself not only strong but loyal. I think that was one of the best moments in this book for me.
I recommend this series to anyone who loves mermaid lore, and anyone who loves a good YA Fantasy with strong friendship themes and strong female characters!
