This author had a home run of a story in the first 120 pages that he just completely threw away to instead tell a story that was utterly boring. He decided to take so many turns that sadly all ended in dead ends. I will say, he has beautiful prose but his character descriptions were extremely flat. By around page 300, I couldn’t keep the characters straight and felt like I knew nobody. Real rough. I just wish an editor stopped him and said, “go back to the story you were telling on the ship with Demetri, tell that story. I’ve heard the future books get better…do they really get THAT much better though?
With that being said, the last 20 pages lead into Book 2 and it seems like there will be a clearer story. We’ll see if I continue on!
