Kind of a Big Deal by Shannon Hale
3.0

Josie Pie was "kind of a big deal" in high school, starring in all the musicals, popular, kind. But her post-high school life is a bit of a mess, and she's having a hard time moving on.

I had a hard time categorizing this book. Is it adult? Teen? New adult? Probably the latter, although I haven't read any others in that genre to compare.

I honestly didn't enjoy the first three-quarters of the book. I enjoyed the concept of jumping into books, and there were some funny bits, but it was overall a downer for me, since Josie's life was a mess and she seemed to be wallowing in it without making much progress forward.

The ending forced me to up my rating, though. I liked how the fantasy plot element resolved—alongside Josie learning a thing or two about moving on with her life.

This was just not the right book for me at this time. I would have likely cried over it my first year or two of college—because moving on was hard for me too. But for me now, it was just kind of meh. It did leave me with food for thought, though, and that's always a good thing, even if I didn't enjoy the whole book.

Content: no language that I can remember, no sex. Too much mention of "chiseled hairless chests" (eyeroll), lots of kissing, mild fantasy violence, a secondary character is transgender.
