Unspeakable Things
by Jess Lourey
I really couldn’t stand the narrator of this story. I went in knowing that it was from a 12 year old’s perspective, so I was prepared for a childish dialogue- but goodness Cassie was annoying. The way she hyper fixated on food was also very strange? The details of all the food in the story just felt super out of place and unnecessary. In fact- there were several points were the the novel drifted into unnecessary detail or plot lines while other more interesting subjects weren’t fleshed out enough. I guess the author’s intention was to let the reader fill in the gaps but it just left me feeling unsatisfied. The book had potential but ultimately falls flat with a weak reveal and poor narration.
