If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finlay
2.75
This book has some good elements and some I didn’t like so much. It was a little hard to follow at times but there is one reveal about 2/3 in which helps to establish how the different stories are connected. It has a lot of action even for a thriller: mobsters, a murder that’s not what you think it is and a new cop whose brother is in the middle of it all. It was certainly entertaining but there were some issues I had with it.
It wasn’t established that the Chaz/Patrick/O’leary/Michael parts were in the past. I think that was to make the reveal more unexpected but I would have preferred if those chapters specified that the high school drama happened 5 year prior. Second, I felt the book was lackluster. It relies too much on action and not enough on substantive writing. There are lots of scenes of people relaying information to each other, repeating parts of the plot over and over again which is just filler. For a book which is only 300 pages, there shouldn’t have been so many of these passages. Third, I didn’t particularly like the FBI agent storyline. Sure it makes for a good twist, but if she really was fired, why didn’t the sheriff just tell her that to begin with? Also why would a brand new cop be the only cop assigned to a break in a huge cold case? I understand a lot of this was for the plot but honestly a lot of it just didn’t make sense. Still, I’m giving it 3 stars because it’s like an action film where you want to know how it ends and there are some good twists, but the substance was not always there.
