Read this after reading Elantris, knowing it takes place in the same planet, so I had fun finding the little Easter eggs and trying to connect the story and magic to that of Elantris, seeing if it would expand the world. The story by itself though was really enjoyable and had a lot of charm and intrigue on its own. The writing felt a lot more introspective than the other cosmere books I’ve read so far, and I loved the exploration into the soul and the many facets of a human’s essence and influences, both internal and external. I loved the discussions of art and history, what it means to be a “true artist” and the moral debates that arise from creating replicas. Always impressed by an author that’s able to create such depth and substance in such a short story and this one is chock full of interesting themes and emotional depth. A fantastic novella by all means!
