After the Quake
by Haruki Murakami
The 1995 Kobe earthquake showed the fragility of modern life in Japan. Murakami uses the earthquake in the background, a window-dressing that serves as a reminder for his characters that life is an endless sea of roiling change with a thin crust of stability on top. With the sole exception of an unassuming young salaryman and his frog, they are all realist stories that examine the subtle interplay of emotion and longing present in the lives of their characters. These movements and exchanges are handled with a master's care and the effect is at times quite devastating
