The Dead Romantics
by Ashley Poston
Sweet, but so uneven. The love story was lovely; some of the conversations with the mom and about the dad were very good, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t mist up a handful of times.
But there were so many things that were clearly supposed to be significant but were so shallowly explored. The looming idea that Florence was DRIVEN OUT OF TOWN, and then the girl who spearheaded the bullying is mentioned once before she appears, confronted AND forgiven during that first appearance, and then redeems herself with a bunch of flowers?
Also, the determinedly qUiRkY town with the dog mayor and undertaker they all loved? Burn it down. Burn it the fuck down. Go back to New York, Florence and Ben — this place will suffocate you.
And WHY does this family love chain restaurants so much? They eat at Waffle House every day, and go to Olive Garden for a fancy dinner. Was this book spon con?
