Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay
4.0

I haven't read GGK in 30 years. 30 years ago, he was my favorite author. I had been worried that in my adulthood, I'd find his writing too flowery. However, I'd heard through booktube and the like that he got better at handling his incredible talent with prose and making it less dramatic and... well, I'm going to use the word flowery again.

I know this book is only a few years younger than 30, and I look forward to reading more Kay chronologically to see his continued progression. The writing, prose and characters here are very excellent and exactly what I expected. He has, indeed, become less flowery and more deliberate in his writing, and I really appreciated that.

I went into this book thinking it was essentially a standalone, and book 2 of the Sarantine Mosaic happens several hundred years later with different characters, as I believe all of his later books do. However, that was not the case - Sailing to Sarantium doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but it in no way wraps up the story - this is just the first half. This was a disappointment when I realized it towards the end of the book, and that probably affected my scoring of this novel.

Still, bravo, I really enjoy Kay and I can't wait to continue - I'm just sad I have more to go to see what happens to Crispin and the others in this wonderful story!
