Arabella by Georgette Heyer
4.0

I ALWAYS enjoy Georgette Heyer - some are more favorite than others.

This is one that has been packed up for awhile. I finally downloaded it to my Nook to read instead of digging through boxes (which I can't even get to now what with moving and stuff). I did enjoy this one, Arabella is the oldest daughter of a vicar (the younger son) and is considered quite a beauty. Her father does not encourage vanity and teaches his numerous children to do the right thing, regardless of the conventions of society. He is not best-pleased when Arabella's godmother invites her to London for a season. Her godmother is one of her mother's dear friends. Arabella's mother convinces him to let her go to London, despite his misgivings that she will be taken up by dissipation and enjoyment. Arabella manages to remain true to her rearing and creates quite a stir in London. Unfortunately, in a spurt of temper she pretended to be an heiress to one of the arbiters of society. He doubts her, but decides it would be amusing to pretend to know of her family and fortune. This sets her up for some real trouble with fortune hunters and any prospective suitors because her mother is depending on her to marry well so she can sponsor her younger sisters.
Sticky situation - she cannot accept any offers because then she would have to tell her suitor she has no fortune......
And the arbiter of society has developed an interest in her habit of fighting for the unfortunate, as he has personally witnessed when a chimney boy falls down the chimney into her room.
