Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion

3.0

Warm Bodies is a retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in a zombie apocalypse. R is dead. he is a zombie without any identity to associate himself with. Julie is a feisty girl who is a hot mess. While on a food hunt with his zombie fellows, he comes across Julie. Instead of eating her, he saves her and an unusual but tender relationship begins.
Suddenly, he becomes a rebel and doesn't want to "live" in the grave anymore. He wants to breathe, to love, and Julie wants to help him. But the world they are trapped in, won't accept it.
Although the plot is not very new, it has a few good twists and turns. But, the characters are well described and vivid. Everyone has a purpose to be there, a way to drive the story forward. There were none of those sidekicks just for comical amusement.
It is humorous and tragic at the same time. You don't take back anything very profound from it but it still manages to punch you in the gut several times.
