The Maze of Bones
by Rick Riordan
This is a fun start to what looks like a promising series. There are lots of elements that remind you of other great middle grade/YA stories (Riordan's other stories, of course, Lemony Snicket, Harry Potter, to name a few), but it manages not to feel cliched or overdone. A VERY quick read for adults, probably also for kids. I like that there's an online tie-in (and imagine that appeals to kids, too). I haven't played with it yet but plan to in the near future.
I decided to pick this up because I love Rick Riordan. This was clearly a Rick Riordan book -- it followed a very similar outline to his other (kids') series. The book reminded me of everything I love about him (I feel like he really gets how middle schoolers think), but also of some of the issues I have with his writing (sometimes I feel like he just accepts stereotypes without letting his characters examine or challenge them). This book felt a little bit flatter and less developed than his others, but certainly still entertaining. I want to know what happens next!
I definitely want to finish the original series, especially because I'm interested in experiencing other authors' takes on the story. But I guess we'll see if I want to delve into the (apparently numerous) spin-offs after that....
