Bullet Train
by Kōtarō Isaka
Organised chaos in the best possible way. Action-packed with twists and turns, what happens next is always a shock. An eclectic cast of misfit characters, all of who add a great deal to the overall story. The Bullet Train was an immense read with so much going on. I loved it.
The characters are such a unique cast, all with their unusual blend of personalities. Some you’ll love, others you’ll hate, but none you’ll forget. Having them all crammed into one setting allows us to travel from one to another seamlessly. Everyone has their motives and ideas and when they all intertwine it’s great fun to read. With plenty of surrounding passengers, all of who are wonderful additions to an already brilliant bunch. Creating some of the most likeable and despicable characters adds such an amazing contrast, and has you willing each person's fate.
All going on at once at times, it felt as if I was going as fast as a bullet train at points. Reading on and on to see what was next and more importantly who was next was brilliant. Thrilling throughout, each chapter was just another reason to keep reading. Filled with moments that will evoke emotion in you, from laughter to hatred and back again. I can only say you’ll be hooked. Just when you think it’s beginning to settle down it once again speeds up. The book is written like a train journey. Starting slow then reaching top speed, before it slows for each station but speeds right back up.
In a book that is heavy on dialogue, I had zero issues with this. It gives each character time to ingratiate themselves to the reader.
Not perfect and many may have plenty of faults with this book. I, however, am not one of them. For me, this was a tremendous read from page one. A simple idea with lots going on, it had it all. As someone who reads for entertainment, this book delivered, 100%. I was enthralled throughout and enjoyed every word.
Overall The Bullet Train has so much to offer. Fun and frantic from the first page to last, I couldn’t recommend this Kotaro Isaka novel enough.
