Red Rabbit by Alex Grecian

3.5

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (3.5 stars)

Red Rabbit is a strange, atmospheric blend of Western and folk horror. The writing is sparse and sharp, with a bleak tone and flashes of dry humour that I really enjoyed.

“The house would not burn easily, but it would cause her some irritation.”

The setting is vivid. I could feel the dust and dread of the Wild West creeping in.

That said, I found it lacking in character and plot depth. While a few characters grew on me, most felt underdeveloped, and I never felt fully connected to them. The story had a dreamlike, off-kilter quality, which worked well for building unease, but left me a bit confused in the final stretch. I did appreciate that things were tied up by the end, just not always in a way that felt fully earned.

It’s definitely unique, and I’m glad I read it. I’d read more from Alex Grecian, especially for the style and tone, but this one didn’t quite hit all the marks for me.
