A Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass

3.0

It was a fascinating concept and Mia's synthesia is written very well. The depiction of her colors and how they affect her world was engrossing. The plot was well developed even when you know the focus will be on synthesia, greif, and deep bonds with pets. The Winchel family dynamic was believable and used expertly in the plot. Hartwrinching bits are mixed with humor to cleave you hooked. However, I didn't entirely expect how strong 'influence of the supernatural' would be. These elements were made integral to the story, which is a minus for me. I don't like what Mia became enamored with or most of the decisions she made. While I can appreciate this in novels when it leads to positive character growth, I didn't leave the book with that perception.

TLDR: The supernatural aspects of this book decracted from my reading experience. For this reason, many of Mia's decisions, and not a lot of closure on these affects, I would at least hesitate to recommend this book.
