The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe
3.0
slow-paced

I read this book because it was mentioned in Northanger Abbey.
I honestly didn’t really like the main character or her actions. Things were always happening to her and she made no attempt or choices to make her situation better because it was not in her nature or character. she was just too “good”. I can understand that she lived in a time when she didn’t have a lot of agency but she definitely had some and she did not use it.
Also the way she would be convinced of certain things like a character being dead or a character being a captive without any evidence was tiring.
I stand by my opinion - I liked Annette’s character more.
The book neatly answered all the mysteries at the end. There was definitely a religious/christian bend in there. There were places that were considered “haunted” but ended up having reasonable(?) explanations and there definitely a certain scoffing happening at people who believed in the supernatural.
