Hungry Hearts: 13 Tales of Food & Love by Elsie Chapman

3.0

Hungry Hearts held thirteen unique stories about food, relationships and more. All of the stories encompassed their own intriguing individuals and their story. As with every short story collection, I loved some more than others: "Rain," "The Grand Ishq Adventure," "Sugar and Spice," and "The Slender One." Then, there were others that I felt did not follow the theme of love that is expressed as the main point of the short collection, which was really off-putting. There were many of them that showed how food brought people together then there were a few that felt out of place: "Kings and Queens," and "The Missing Ingredient."

This was a delightful read. I particularly loved the references to stores and foods from other short stories or the feature of a main character from another. It was quite brilliant that way. I simply wish that the theme was more united throughout the entire collection. Some stories were stronger than others, some were heavily confusing ("Bloom."), other's felt rushed (mainly the last two). But, I loved the stories that focused on food and how it brings people together, whether it was family, friends or rivals.
