Gilgamesh: A New English Version by Stephen Mitchell

4.0

Teacher/ Parents may want to know: This modern retelling is considerably more explicit than the Penguin Classic edition I am using with my sophomores. When the Penguin edition (N.K. Sandars) says, "They embraced," the Stephen Mitchell edition provides specific details. I joked with my friends that this edition was Fifty Shades of Gilgamesh. I am thankful that I did not go with my original plan of telling students to purchase/ check out whichever version of the epic they wanted. I would be in the head of school's office, responding to parent concerns.

I'm giving the edition four stars because I liked the ease of reading it. Mitchell's version is not what I would choose for students, but an adult who wants a quick idea of the plot would enjoy it.
