Present Over Perfect: Leaving Behind Frantic for a Simpler, More Soulful Way of Living by Shauna Niequist

1.0

Ugh. This was recommended to me as a book for our mom book club, and I don’t want to subject anyone else to this book. I read to around page 130 (50%) then skimmed the rest.

As other reviews have mentioned, this is a diary/blog post-like style - the chapters are as short as 2 pages, the topics are all wildly all over the place, and everything is about the author. This is a memoir - not a self-help book, not a book of advice, nada. I don’t care for her writing style and choppy chapters.

Her theology as a Christian is extremely flawed, and as a follower of Christ, why would I look to her as an example when halfway through the book she even admitted that she never even prayed to Jesus. I skimmed the second half of the book, and even by the end she talks about how awkward it is to accept that she has direct access to Jesus. This woman has supposedly built her career on writing books targeted at Christian women and attending Christian events. She keeps repeating that Christian women are taught to bend over backwards, ignore their own bodies and need for rest, and to just push push push. I think she needs to reread Proverbs 31 and the story of Mary and Martha. Seems like we’ve got a Martha on our hands.

This was my first and last read from her, as I can’t put myself through anymore of her writing.
