The Demon in the Wood by Leigh Bardugo

5.0

This is exactly what I needed to read! Darkling, as a 13-year-old boy! Desperate, lonely and hiding his powers from the world. Okay! This may be a little weird but I have a very strange fascination for the Darkling. I know he is evil and he does horrifying things but he is such a mystery and let’s be fair that’s damn! Intriguing. Also, this story reveals so much about the Darkling’s childhood, the hardships his mother and he had to bear, always moving to new places, always changing their identities and the toll it took on him.

He just wants to feel that sense of belonging and build a better world for all the Grisha’s in general. Unfortunately, and just sometimes when you set out to change the world it’s easy to lose yourself and do things which you never imagine you can do. And that is what happened with the Darkling, at some point in his long-long life, he lost his sight blurring the lines between right and wrong which ultimately led him to do such unspeakable things.

As far as this story is concerned though, I loved everything about it especially, the relationship the Darkling shares with his mother. In fact, I kind of feel bad about how the relationship between him and his mother not only changed but worsened in the years that followed. However, this story does a fabulous job of humanising his character after all, once he was just a boy, a boy with tremendous power and hope to one day change the world.

Now, I need some more Darkling!
