When She Purrs by Ruby Dixon

So the first full-length novel of the Risdaverse, which I really anticipated after several too-abrupt novellas, and . . it dragged for me, I'm not gonna lie.

I hit a HUGE reading slump in the middle of this novel, which I thought at first might be coincidence (I did binge Dixon's books during 2020, rendering the tropes a bit tired).

Then I read the author's note and realized that the story dragged and felt directionless because it WAS directionless to begin. Dixon said herself that it was a fun early-pandemic project that kind of grew into a different beast as she went along, which totally aligns with my reading. I actually enjoyed the last third of the book and found it much more purposeful in its plot and clear in its characterizations.

Otherwise, the whole praxiian thing isn't my favorite. It squicks me out how closely Dixon modeled them off cats (also why in this universe do multiple alien species have cats?) It didn't help that the whole praxiian mating culture thing was really skeevy, what with the jerking off over people's doors as a sign of interest and whatnot.

The novel found its legs towards the end, as I said, but unfortunately, for me, it was a little too late.
