Let me preface this by saying I've had this book on my TBR radar for well over a decade, ever since seeing it's rise to cherished piece of fandom lit. Over the years, I've gained through osmosis an understanding that this goes far beyond a typical sports drama. The twist to its approach is intriguing to say the least, and the fervor of its fans left me eager to finally dive in.
And yet... no one ever mentioned that this book was, well, bad. I can take that with a grain of salt and the understanding that this is self-published/unedited, but I was truly taken aback by some of the writing here. The dialogue is stilted and the complexity of characters is almost completely dependent on stereotyping of mental illness for some and an over reliance on (frankly unexpected) slur usage to express the prickliness of others. The worst offense is the plot itself, which moves with a frenetic pace and yet gets almost nowhere by the abrupt end of book one. I'm hesitant to label this a melodrama, though that feels like the intent, simply because the story notes are not trackable in any sensible way.
All of that to say that I am, somehow, still curious to see the end of this strange, mercurial story. I've heard tell that the writing does marginally improve and I do think I'd have a serious case of FOMO if not speeding through the rest of the series. I'm happy to at least say the book was a pretty fast read once I actually sat with it.
tl;dr if you're looking for the nostalgic release of a downright befuddling wattpad story read in the small hours of the night, this is for you
