The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead
2.5

I think the narrative style just really didn’t work for me, or maybe I wasn’t in the headspace for this kind of story. I felt like the first 1/3 of the book was very strong, and then things started getting repetitive and convoluted with what the author was trying to do with Turner and Elwood’s perspectives. I’m def the unpopular opinion on this, but I feel like the story of the dozier school would’ve been done better justice without trying to have a plot twist worked in. Telling Elwood’s story clearly and thoroughly without trying to trick the reader into thinking things went okay for him would’ve been a lot more powerful, I feel.
