I enjoyed this book set in the early 1900s. Mattie is very intelligent and has earned a full scholarship to Barnard. If she was born today, it would have been a no-brainer whether or not to go. But she was born in a different time, with a family who needs and depends on her. Would she choose to marry a farm boy/live the life her mother lived until she died, or would she set out on her own? Mattie has several strong role models: her favorite teacher, a boy she's friends with, her father, and a lady who died under mysterious circumstances near the inn she works at.
