Act of Mercy by Mandy M. Roth

3.0

3.5 stars!

I really enjoyed this book! I just recently read the first Immortal Ops book by this author, and while I enjoyed it, it lacked story and character development. It was just too short to feel complete. This book, Act of Mercy, is what I wanted Immortal Ops to be. Act of Mercy still isn't a long book, but it's longer than what I would consider a novella. It's long enough for there to be decent story and character development.

Duke Marlow is a PSI Ops agent and an alpha wolf. He's grumpy most of the time; hates everything, especially technology. He's been alive for awhile and believes that if he was going to find his mate, he would have found her by now. Mercy is a doctor for a corporation that is secretly trying to make the perfect race. They are doing this by kidnapping paranormals, testing them, torturing them, and usually end up killing them. Unaware at first, Mercy soon discovers what is really going on. She befriends one of their "test subjects", Jimmy, and tries to save him and the others. Jimmy is a former agent and gives Mercy instructions and information on how to contact the PSI Ops.

Duke is a huge, dark, and sexy shifter (of course). I liked Duke as a hero even though he was a grump. I felt like toward the end of the book he was less of a grump than the beginning. Not because of Mercy, but kind of because his character seemed to change. Mercy is a forgetful nerd, a redhead, and apparently part pixie. As a heroine, I liked Mercy well enough. I did find her annoying at the very end of the book, but I seem to find all heroines annoying sometime during a story. Duke and Mercy are mates. For some reason Mercy doesn't want to accept that, even though Duke is "the perfect man". I don't get that. She was in denial even though she knew it was true. That was annoying. The chemistry between the H and h is hot and steamy. The secondary characters, the other PSI Ops agents, were great and likable. I can't wait to read their stories.

The story was great. The dialogue between the characters was fun and light. I really liked this book and would have rated it higher if it wasn't for the ending. For some reason I just felt like it was too rushed. It also felt a little disconnected from the flow of the story. I wanted maybe more or something a little different, I don't know. It's a series I'll continue with though!
