Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand

3.0

I am not a fan of historical texts, including biographies and the like. I would never volunteer to read this book since it's the story of a survivor of so very many things during WWII, but primarily a series of POW camps. Sounds painful to read, right? Well... it was. But very interesting as much as it was hard to get through. I really enjoyed the pictures throughout, allowing me to put names to faces and get a better understanding of the parties involved. I also liked a lot of the footnotes. I understand that with the audio book you won't get access to these, so for that reason alone, I highly recommend the actual ink-and-paper version. The footnotes often tie up loose ends about tangential characters.

Overall, I confess to not hating my book club for making me read this. It is certainly very provocative, forcing me to think about the horrors of those who lived through WWII and also to wonder what sorts of torture goes on behind closed doors that we never hear about... eerie.
