Summer of the Sea Serpent by Mary Pope Osborne

4.0

This was one of the more epic of the Magic Treehouse books, as Jack and Annie retrieve the sword Excalibur (!) for Merlin. It also introduces Kathleen, a selfie who will go to be a recurring character along with apprentice wizard Teddy.

I read this with my seven-year-old son, who has become quite the Magic Treehouse fan.

Jack and Annie face a series of challenges, including a magical water knight, a giant spider, and the mighty sea serpent, who is a frightening and powerful adversary for the kids. The sea serpent and the spider queen both had great scenes, although I was disappointed the author chose to give the animal-loving Annie a somewhat stereotypical fear of spiders. To her credit, she does end up rethinking this as the story moves on.

The ending does a nice job of wrapping up loose ends and fitting the kids' quest into the context of Celtic and Arthurian mythology.
